Canterbury tales middle english audio8/12/2023 ![]() He represents another of the tale's major themes: order. ![]() Or does it? That's the question "The Knight's Tale" wants you to think about.īrought in to solve the conflict, we have the almost impossibly noble Duke Theseus. ![]() But when they both fall into (courtly) love with Emily, they have to be willing to do anything to win her, which includes breaking their promise to one another. As brother knights, they should be willing to do anything to protect one another. In any case, we have these two codes of behavior: chivalry and courtly love and in "The Knight's Tale" we get to see what happens when the two codes clash. The rules of courtly love were even written down in a treatise by a 12th-century French courtier, Andreas Capellanus, in a work called De Amore, although literary types disagree on whether or not this work is meant to be serious or just a way to make fun of the courtly love tradition. In fact, his love for her makes the knight stronger and more honorable. The woman in a courtly love story is placed on a pedestal: she is totally perfect in every way, and the knight practically worships her. The system got its start in the literature of the Aquitaine region in France, where troubadours sang ballads about the often secret and illicit love of knights for noblewomen (scandalous!). Courtly love was actually a "system" of love, just as chivalry was a system of knightly behavior. "The Knight's Tale" is also concerned with courtly love, which demanded the loyalty of the knight to just one person: his lady-love. Think King Arthur and you're on the right track. The rules of chivalry included things like always keeping your promises, defending the helpless, and remaining loyal to your lord and fellow knights no matter what. The name of the game in "The Knight's Tale" is chivalry, a system of rituals, duties, and behaviors a knight was supposed to follow if he wished to behave with honor. Since the two knights have apparently sworn to support each other in everything, each one's love for Emily does not go over well. Geoffrey Chaucer's " The Knight's Tale" found in The Canterbury Tales, is the story of two knights from Thebes who fall in love with the same woman, a princess of Athens named Emily. Xcode icon png8/12/2023 ![]() The center image can be specified in the following sizes: The rendering, however, can be as simple or as rich as you’d like. The shape of the artwork should be simple to make it easily identifiable in smaller sizes. Curves and points can extend into the margin to adjust for optical alignment. For example, on the 256x256 version, the drawing should be inside a 205x205 area, as shown in the image below. The bulk of the artwork for the center image should be drawn at ~80% of the canvas size. ![]() For example, the center image displays at 16pt on a 32pt icon size. The center image is always half the size of the document canvas. The Xcode Project icon and the Rich Text Format icons use nothing but the background fill element to create a custom look and feel. If you plan to create multiple custom icons for different file types, it’s important to make each design distinct and understandable to help people know what to expect when they open them.īeginning with macOS Big Sur, you can generate a new custom document icon with a set of images and a text string. Additionally, think of other document types that your document may commonly be next to, and use distinct shapes and colors that are identifiable even at smaller sizes. Try to depict what your icon represents as closely as possible and with as few details as possible. When creating a custom icon, we recommend keeping its design simple. For example, a drawing application may open a jpg file, a project file, a library of drawing components, a plugin or a color swatch. You can additionally create a custom document icon if your app supports multiple file types and you’d like to visually distinguish between them. This is a common pattern for imported document types or non-proprietary file formats that your application can open such as MP3, JPG or PNG.īoth the Music and Preview apps use system-generated document icons for document types like JPG and MP3. Design a document icon for your appīy default, if you don’t specify a document icon for a file type in your app, macOS will automatically create one for you by compositing your app’s icon together with the correct extension name. We’ll show you how to design a great icon, integrate it into your Xcode project, and assign document types and type identifiers. With macOS Big Sur, you can customize and control how your app’s document icons display across the system. If someone has chosen not to show document extensions in System Preferences, these icons can additionally provide additional context in deciphering their file type and native program. These icons may be displayed on screen as small as 16pt or large enough to showcase every glorious design detail.ĭepending on the file type and personal preference, document icons can also display document previews. A good document icon aids in the identification of your file on the Desktop, in a Finder window, or in an open dialog, especially when previews aren’t available. It is also used for marine propulsion (mostly naval). While nuclear power is the predominant use of uranium, heat from nuclear fission can be used for industrial processes. ![]() Uranium-235 is the only naturally-occurring material which can sustain a fission chain reaction, releasing large amounts of energy. Today the only substantial use for uranium is as fuel in nuclear reactors, mostly for electricity generation. This element was used in luminous paint, particularly on the dials of watches and aircraft instruments up to the 1950s, and in medicine for the treatment of disease.įor many years from the 1940s, virtually all of the uranium that was mined was used in the production of nuclear weapons, but this ceased to be the case in the 1970s. In the past, uranium was also used to colour glass (from as early as 79 AD) and deposits were once mined in order to obtain its decay product, radium. Natural uranium is a mixture of isotopes, including a small proportion of one that is fissile – readily able to fission (split) to yield vastly more energy than any combustion process. When mined, it yields a mixed uranium oxide product, U 3O 8. Uraninite, or pitchblende, is the most common uranium mineral. There are a number of locations in different parts of the world where it occurs in economically-recoverable concentrations. Being relatively soluble (in contrast to thorium), it is also found in the oceans, at an average concentration of 3 parts per billion. It occurs in most rocks in concentrations of 2 to 4 parts per million and is as common in the Earth's crust as tin, tungsten and molybdenum and about 40 times as common as silver. Uranium was discovered by Martin Klaproth, a German chemist, in 1789 in the mineral pitchblende, and was named after the planet Uranus. As decay proceeds, the final product, lead, increases in relative abundance. Its radioactive decay provides the main source of heat inside the Earth, causing convection and continental drift. The Earth's uranium (chemical symbol U) was apparently formed in supernovae up to about 6.6 billion years ago (see information page on The Cosmic Origins of Uranium). The health hazards associated with uranium are much the same as those for lead. Most of the uranium used in nuclear reactors can be recycled.Depleted uranium is a by-product from enriching natural uranium to use in nuclear power reactors.Uranium occurs naturally in the Earth's crust and is mildly radioactive. It is the only element with a naturally-occurring fissile isotope. The basic fuel for a nuclear power reactor is uranium – a heavy metal able to release abundant concentrated energy.
